Master Roland Yuno Rech
Born in 1944, Roland Yuno Rech graduated from the Institut d'études politiques de Paris in 1966 and then obtained a DESS (postgraduate diploma) in clinical psychology. After three years working in industry, he travelled around the world and discovered the practice of zazen at the temple of Antaiji in Kyoto. Moved by this experience, he decided to study under Master Deshimaru in Paris in 1972. He became his disciple and was ordained as a monk in 1974.
While working in industry, he helped the mission by becoming one of its translators, by taking care of the coordination of the dojos and the publication of its books, and by directing sesshins. After the death of Master Deshimaru in 1982, he became president of the AZI, a position he held until 1994. In 1984 he received the shiho (transmission of the Dharma) from Master Renpo Niwa zenji of the Eiheiji temple.
In 1986, he helped found the Buddhist Union of France, of which he was vice-president for 15 years.
He teaches at the Temple Gyobutsuji in Nice, as well as during numerous sesshins in Europe. He gave the shiho to several of his disciples, whose names appear on the calendar page of the ABZE website among the sesshin leaders.
He is also vice-abbot of the Gendronnière temple and vice-president of AZI.
His teachings are published in book form in the Yuno Kusen collection. He has published numerous works, including:
Moine zen en Occident - Albin Michel,
Zen, l'éveil au quotidien - Actes Sud,
Manuel de méditation zen, éditions Le Relié
Sutras Zen, éditions Le Relié
et un entretien avec E. Blatchen dans l'émission Noms de Dieu diffusé en France par Desclée de Brouwer.
