Fukanzazengi

Fukanzazengi, the Standard of Sitting-Zen Recommended for Everyone, Eihei Dogen

Written in 1227, it is the first writing on zazen in Japan. Dogen considered it as having universal scope. Zazen is not a technique to reach awakening; zazen is itself the “manifestation of ultimate reality… the practice-realisation of perfect awakening.” The Fukanzazengi is chanted in the evening in temples during zazen.
