Joining the International Zen Association

The International Zen Association was founded by Master Deshimaru in the 1970s. He put all his faith and energy into it, transmitting the Buddha-Way and Zen practice to the West. By founding the Gendronnière temple in 1979, he has given us an unmatched gift and tool whereby we can practice the Buddha-Dharma and spread it in a world that needs it more and more. The commitment to take care of what we have received and to pass it on to future generations so that peace and compassion become a reality, is nothing less than actualising the bodhisattva vows.

Why subscribe to the AZI?

To enable the Association to retain its strength and create authentic activities that respond to suffering; and to make a necessary return to fundamental values;
To enable the organisation of sesshins, various sessions, symposiums and events at the Gendronnière as well as in every country where practicing members live;
To promote news and teachings for everyone via regular publications;
To finance a structure that ensures that administrative work and the running of the Association and the Gendronnière are carried out;
To maintain a vital link with all dojo practitioners in the world and to be able to receive at the Gendronnière all those who need to return to the source.

Of course, everyone will have their own personal reasons for joining the Association. Membership is the means by which we stay in touch with the practice and it enables us to keep up to date with the development of the Sangha.

Hosetsu Laure Scemama

Hosetsu Laure Scemama was born in 1948 and worked as a teacher. Since 1977, she has practised everyday and was ordained nun by Master Deshimaru.

She is actively engaged in responsibilities in the dojos of Marrakech then of Toulon. From 1997 to 2002, she resides at La Gendronniere Temple then participates as founder member to the creation of Kanshoji Temple (Dordogne). In 2003, she creates the dojo of Limoges where she teaches. She also teaches in sesshins in France and in Europe.

She is the Zen Association of Kanshoji's general secretary and the International Zen Association's deputy general secretary.

She practised for many months in temples in Japan and she received Dharma transmission from Donin Minamizawa Roshi.

Commemorating PastWorlds and finding Light for the Present One

In June of this year, we are going to pay homage to Taisen Deshimaru Roshi, father of Soto Zen Buddhism in Europe, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his arrival in Europe, a precious moment.

This will be an opportunity for us to show our gratitude for the opening of this transmission which was given to us 40 years ago, at a time when each day began in the silence of the first light of dawn. It is not simply a matter of looking towards the past, but of shedding light on our future by following footsteps of the past, and trying to give new breath to this Dharma that we have received.This will also be an occasion for the different sanghas to reunite at La Gendronnière temple at this magnificent time of year when the flowers are in full bloom, and this blossoming will, I hope, cast its blessing on this commemoration.

Jiko Simone Wolf

Born in 1950, she began practicing zazen in the Paris dojo with Master Taisen Deshimaru from whom she received nun ordination. After the death of her master, she founded the Zen Center of La Chaux-de-Fonds, in Switzerland. She is part of the International Zen Association Committee and teaches in French-speaking Switzerland and is invited to direct different sesshins around Europe.

In 2004, she received Dharma Transmission from Master Yuko Okamoto, who was a close friend to both Master Deshimaru and Master Kodo Sawaki.

Jiko Simone Wolf resides at the Center Zen La Chaux-de-Fonds and contributes her knowlege of zen through conferences and by active participation in the life of her region.
